Gunmen killed a Buddhist monk and wounded two others when they are collecting alms in the southern region of Thailand.
Three monks who were shot by two assailants riding a motorcycle when they were through a crowded area in the province of Pattani.
The monks are often escorted to prevent them being attacked, but police said the victims did not guarded because they do not feel at risk in one market because many people.
Islamic hardliners staged a bloody insurgency in Thailand's southernmost region bordering Malaysia since early 2004 and caused 4400 people were killed, including Muslims and Buddhists.
The violence apparently increased recently. A bomb in Yala province killed nine villagers in January. A week earlier guerrilla group attacked a military base, killing four soldiers.
Last month, a grenade and bomb attack on a karaoke bar in the city of Narathiwat injuring 17 people. One another explosion in a crowded street in the city of Yala killed a shop worker and injuring 13 others.
